Fiddle Maker

Has anyone heard of a violin maker from 1900-1930 called David Johnstone who had a motorcycle repair business in kirkmuirhill, Lanarkshire?  Apart from fixing motorbikes during the day, he made violins in his spare time and also fishing tackle!  Quite a variety?   We have two of his violins in South Lanarkshire museums as well as templates and patterns etc.

  • There was a discussion about David Johnstone's on Maestronet a while back. Best that they could determine was that he was an amateur maker. There was thoughts about whether or not he may have built using some pre-made parts. He was not listed in any of the violin maker annals of Scotland or Northern England during that time period. Of the two examples pictured, there was quite a difference in quality between the two (however, there's every possibility that one of the two was re-finished, and poorly, during the intervening years.
