  • Just reading the list and you could add Mike Berry who a fine english concertina and hammer dulcimer player and I think Ian Kilpatrick the accordion player is also now playing the concertina.
  • Sorry my apologies I meant to say Jack Bethel instead of Mike Berry - wasnt thinking straight as they always used to play together in sessions
  • Karen B also learning: Ian Russell at the Elphinstone Institute in Aberdeen may know of more as he organises the Button Boxes and Moothies weekends which happen every few years. And in this context the term button boxes does include concertinas, as there were a good few there!
  • Yes thanks Hotch, I already have Jacks name on the list.

Before I add Ians name to the list Hotch, do you happen to know for sure, that Ian Kilpatrick is playing an ENGLISH Concertina?

Tattie, is that her full name? ...... Karen B :-)

the term button boxes does include concertinas, as there were a good few there!

Aye, well why not Tattie, after all, there are always a good few buttons on a Concertinas Box! :-)

    Cheers Dick

  • Ill ask Karen about putting her full name up! My remark about button boxes was just in case someone thought I was talking melodeons again (I call mine - button accordion - a button box for short!) Yes I did realise that you have buttons on concertinas.
  • Thanks, but Im quite happy to just put Karen B, if she doesnt want her full name on the list. Perhaps she doesnt even want her name mentioned at all. You are right though, its probably best to check first .. thanks.

As for the buttons, yeah, I know, I was just messin!

    Cheers Dick

  • Mike Berry, who sadly died earlier this year, did play english concertina. When we first started playing together I had an old wooden ended Wheatstone in old pitch and I used to borrow Mikes concertina. In fact when Setanta started at first Mike played a couple of sets on concertina and I played fiddle. Mike sold me his concertina, with a view to buying an anglo, and thats what I still play.

Iain Kirkpatrick plays a McCann system.

Willie Macrae gave me another couple of names, his wife Maggie plays english concertina and so does Drew Moyes. Another player in Glasgow is Brian Johnstone.

Another player no longer with us is Archie Frame from East Kilbride. Archie was better known as a singer but he also played a 56 key Wheatstone.

    Jack

  • WAAA Heyyy! Your on the ball this morning, young Sir!

Brilliant. thanks for all that info. Great to hear all the personal stuff too.

Ill go and add those worthy names to the list.

    Thanks again Jack.

    Cheers Dick

  • Thanks to Jack, we can now add a few more names to the list. 46 now ... whod have thunk it?

    Well spotted Tattie.

  • Hellooooo everyone! How are you Jack and D.... Ptarmigan? Janetta here... Just come across this discussion on concertina players and at last have got around to registering on this discussion forum - hello Simon too!

I have added Pete Heywood of Kilmarnock (Living Tradition magazine editor) to the list below. Hes been playing English Concertina since the sixties and did so in the band that came out of the Kilmarnock Folk Club in late seventies - Tam Cats Band - with line-up at various times of Pete, Heather Heywood, Peter Fairbairn, Janetta Fairbairn, Mary Stewart, Blair Mathewson, Ian Goodwin, Maggie Macrae, Willie Macrae....et al

I dabbled with the concertina myself and might have gone in that direction, but I fell in love with hammered dulcimer instead.
